Study Destination ยท Malaysia

Western-twinned degrees. English instruction. A fraction of UK costs.

Malaysia is one of the few countries where Nigerian students can complete a degree from a UK or Australian university โ€” at a Malaysian branch campus or through a twinning programme โ€” at a cost that is 40โ€“60% lower than studying in the source country. English is the primary language of instruction. The Nigerian community in Kuala Lumpur is well-established and actively welcoming.

Why Malaysia

Three reasons to consider Malaysia in 2026.

01 โ€” Twinning Value

A UK or Australian degree. At Malaysian cost.

Monash University Malaysia, the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, and UCSI University all offer degrees that are identical to their UK or Australian parent institution. The parchment is the same. The cost is 40โ€“60% lower. For families who want the credential brand without the credential price, this is the most efficient route available.

02 โ€” Nigerian Community

One of Asia's most established Nigerian student bases.

Kuala Lumpur has a large, organised Nigerian student community โ€” NUSA (Nigerian Union of Students in Malaysia) is active, social support networks exist, and the cultural adjustment is relatively gentle compared to moving to Europe. This matters for students going abroad for the first time.

03 โ€” Cost Structure

Southeast Asia's most comprehensive private education market.

Private university tuition in Malaysia runs RM 15,000โ€“50,000/year depending on institution and programme. At current exchange rates, this is significantly below comparable quality in the UK, Australia, or Canada. Living costs in Kuala Lumpur (RM 1,500โ€“2,500/month) are substantially below any major English-speaking Western city.

Are Malaysian degrees recognised internationally?+

Twinning and branch campus degrees from UK and Australian parent institutions are fully recognised โ€” the degree is issued by the parent university, not the Malaysian campus. Malaysian domestic degrees are recognised in Malaysia and increasingly in international labour markets, particularly in Southeast Asia and the GCC.

How much does it cost to study in Malaysia from Nigeria?+

A realistic first-year budget for a mid-range private university is RM 45,000โ€“70,000, covering tuition (RM 25,000โ€“50,000) and living costs (RM 18,000โ€“30,000).

Can I work while studying in Malaysia?+

Yes โ€” up to 20 hours per week during term-time. Must be in the restaurant, retail, hotel, petrol station, or convenience store sectors only. Full-time work is permitted during official holidays.

Is Malaysia a pathway to permanent residency?+

Malaysia does not have a straightforward post-study immigration pathway to PR comparable to Canada or Australia. Most Nigerian students return home after graduation or use the Malaysia degree as a stepping stone to a Western postgraduate programme.
